Self-designation and group allocation

Abstract A widely held rights-based view asserts that individuals should be permitted to self-designate characteristics such as race and gender. But some argue there are opinions oppose the use only of self-designation, these not ignored. Kasher Rubinstein (Logique Anal 160:385–395, 1997) demonstrated latter is equivalent accepting one or more five conditions must violated. This paper extends their analysis allow for than two categories, focuses on simplifying without jeopardising conclusion. In particular, we significantly weaker independence symmetry common in other extensions original proposition.
